Itpainsusthatwehavesuchdeep-rootedracialandstructuralinequalityinourcountry.Anditsaddensusthatdespitedecadesofdiscussionandpromisesofchange,Americahasnotmadeenoughprogress.

Weliveinonecountry,yethowweeachexperienceourcountrycandependonourrace.Forexample,howweexperiencelawenforcement–asprotectorsorasoppressors–isverydifferent.EachnewincidentofracialprofilingorpoliceviolencedeepensthetraumaformembersoftheBlackcommunity.Theprotestsweareseeingareamanifestationofthistrauma.Treatingtheprotestswithcontemptratherthanseekingtounderstandtheunderlyingfrustrationwillonlyfurtherthedivide.Askyourself,howwouldyoufeelifyourchildrenorlovedoneswereunderconstantthreatandwhatwouldyoudotoprotectthem 

Actionsspeaklouderthanwords.Today,wecommittousingourvoicesandourrolesasbusinessleaderstospeakupandspeakout. 

First,wewillengagewithBlack-ledgroupsandcivillibertiesorganizationstolistentotheirissuesandtosupportthembothfinanciallyandwithresourcesandskillswithinourrespectivecompanies. 

Second,wewillsupportminority-ownedbusinessesinourcommunities.TheCOVID-19pandemichasbeenchallengingforallbusinesses,anddamagecausedbyrecentlootinghasfurtheraddedtothesechallenges.Minority-ownedbusinessesareacrucialcomponentofhowwecreateopportunitiesforallinourcommunities. 

Third,wewillsupporteffortsinIndianapolis,inIndiana,andacrossthecountrytoimproveengagementbetweenthepoliceandallmembersofourcommunity.Wearelearningaboutwhatthoseeffortsshouldentail,andwearecommittedtolendingourvoicestowardmakingrealandlastingchange.

Wealsohaveonerequestforallofyou.Vote.Andmakesureyourfamilymembers,yourfriends,andyourneighborsvote,too.WehaveanopportunitytomakeadifferenceinthegeneralelectioninNovemberandinallsubsequentelections.Weliveinarepresentativedemocracyandeachofusneedstomakesurethatourelectedofficialsrepresentallofthepopulation.Ifwevote,wecanreshapeourcountryandputinplaceleadershipthatcaresforandreflectsthediversityofourcommunities. 

Weallhavearoletoplayincallingforgreateraccountabilityfromourgovernment,fromlawenforcement,ourneighborsandourselves.Whatwehavetodayissimplynotenough.Weneedtoworktogethertorootouthateandreplaceitwithadeepandabidingappreciationfordiversity,equality,andinclusion.Itmuststartwitheachofus,anditmuststartnow.

YeZhangalsosuggeststhatleadersretainflexibilitywhenitcomestoemployeescomingbacktowork.Ifsomeemployeesfeelsaferworkingfromhomeandcontinuetobeproductive,itisimportanttoworkwiththemtoaccommodate.

Nooneshouldfeelafraidtogoforaneighborhoodrunortowalkthroughapark. Ofcourse,noplaceisentirelysafeandtherearebadactorsineverysociety. Butweknowthatitisnotthesamekindofdangerforallofourcitizens.Weliveinonecountry,yetourexperiencesareverydifferentbasedonhowweexperiencelawenforcement–asprotectorsorasthreats.Forthoseofuswhohavetheprivilegetonotworrythatoursonmightbekilledtodaybecausesomebodythinkstheyjust"lookguilty," itistooeasytostandbyandwatch,wonderingifpeopleareoverreacting. Ikeepthinkingabouthowdifferentmyworldwouldfeelifmychildrenwereunderthreat. 

Weeachhavearoletoplayin callingforgreateraccountabilityfromourgovernment,fromlawenforcement,ourneighborsandourselves.

Asacommunity,andparticularlythoseofuswhohavetheprivilegeofnotlivingwiththefearandconstantthreatstoourwell-being,weneedtoleverageourinfluenceandpowertospeakupandspeakout.Wecannolongerbesilentorsitonthesidelines.Weeachhavearoletoplayincallingforgreateraccountabilityfromourgovernment,fromlawenforcement,ourneighborsandourselves.Weneedtoraisethebarandholdourselvestoahigherstandard.Whatwehavetodayissimplynotgoodenough.Weneedtoworktogethertorootouthateandreplaceitwithadeepandabidingappreciationfordiversity,equality,andinclusion.Itstartswithus.Andwecannotwait.

IknowthattheCOVID-19pandemichaschangedthewaysthatweconnectandexpresscaringforoneanother.Itisnotaseasytotalktoeachotherasitusedtobe.Butwecanstillconnectwithothers,andithasneverbeenmoreimportanttodoso. Iamaskingyoutobeproactiveandtocheckinwithyourcolleaguesandfriends,yourteammembers,andotherswhoyouthinkmightbeimpactedinsomewaybythecurrentevents.Don’twaitforthenextscheduledcall–doittoday.Askthemhowtheyaredoing.Befullypresentandlistenempatheticallyandengagewithgenuinecare.

Hehascompletedmorethan100volunteerhoursatthesehospitalsandisscheduledformore.Layton andtheteamhe’sworkingwithhavenowtestedgasesonmorethan3,000 bed-stationsatdifferentNightingalehospitals.Eachbedhasanoxygensupplytodeliverdirectlytopatientsandanotheroxygenandmedicalairsupplytorunventilators.

“Weadheretothehighestsafetyandhygieneproceduresatalltimes,”hesaid.“Wedriveinseparatecarstothehospitals,eventhoughmostofusliveclosetoeachotherandcouldcarpool;wekeepourmaskson;wewashourhandsfrequentlyandwemaintaingooddistancewhileworking.”
