Gainsinwaterconservationhavebeenoneofthebigsuccessesofthecompany’senvironmentalgoalsthatexpirein2020.Approximately1billiongallonsofwaterusehasbeenavoidedsince2010throughthecompany’sconservationefforts,whichhaverangedfromrelativelysimplestepstotheuseofcomplextechnologythatreducestheamountofwaterusedtocoolheavy-dutyenginesduringtestingandcapturetheenergythoseenginesproduceforre-useinCummins’plants.Now,thecompanyisexperimentingwithstate-of-the-artwatertreatmentsystemsthatincludesuchthingsasgreenhousesabundantwithplantlifetohelpfilterwaterforreuse.

Cumminshasalsobeensuccessfulconservingtheenergyitusesthroughits2020goals.Thecompanyhasreducedenergyintensity,theamountofenergyusedadjustedbyhoursworked,morethan30%since2010.CumminshastakenstepssuchasreplacingoldlightswithLEDlighting,andolderaircompressorswithmoreefficientmodelsinadditiontothestepsoutlinedinitemNo.2tocapturetheenergygeneratedbylargeenginesintestcells. Thecompanyhasalsotrainedemployeestofindequipmentandprocessesintheirhomeplantsthatcouldbeimprovedfromanenergyperspective.Meanwhile,Cummins’GHGemissionsadjustedbyhoursworkedfell6%in2018comparedtothepreviousyear.Datafor2019isexpectedtobereleasedsoon.

GroupswithinCummins,includingIndirectPurchasingandManufacturingteamswithinthecompany’sSupplyChainorganization,aswellastheDistributionBusiness’GlobalOperations,aggressivelyreachedouttopotentialsuppliersandidentifiedotherresourcestoaddresstheissuefortheircolleaguesinChina.

AlthoughtheteamsuccessfullysecuredsomeordersfromtheU.S.,U.K.andafewothercountries,therewasstillahugegapbetweenthedemandandsupplyneededtoreopenoperationsandprotectthemorethan12,000CumminsemployeesinChina.

TheturningpointcameinSouthAfrica.AfterreceivingurgentrequestsfromtheircolleaguesinChina,theAfricaandMiddleEastAreaBusinessOrganizationimmediatelymobilized.AnnieChuandYueqianZhanginJohannesburgspentaweekendsearchingforasupplier.OnFeb.2,theysuccessfullysecured500,000FFP2masks.

Thesupplier,however,askedforimmediatepayment,whichmadetheprocessevenmoreurgent.CompanyofficialsinChinaandAfricaworkedwithCorporateSupplyChain,Financeandotherfunctionsaroundtheclocktoresolvethebusinessissueswhileabidingbyallregulationsandrequirements.

Thefirstbatchof160,000masksarrivedinShanghaionFeb.8,andbyFeb.14,alltheremainingmaskshadarrived.ThemasksplayedacriticalroleintheresumptionofbusinessformanyCummins’Chinaoperations.Thecross-borderteamworkiscontinuingasanothersetofmasksisreadiedtoshiptoChina.

“Ithasbeenaprivilegeforustobeinapositionwherewecoulddosomethingtohelp,andIamveryproudofthededicationandselflessnessofourAfricaandMiddleEastemployeesandthegreatcollaborationbetweenthemandourcolleaguesinChina,”saidThierryPimi,ExecutiveManagingDirectoroftheAfricaandMiddleEastAreaBusinessOrganization.

Theteamworkdidn’tstopthere.ManyCumminsemployeegroupshavealsomobilizedtosecuredonationsforindividualsinimpactedregions.Forexample,theColumbusChineseAssociation,CumminsEastAsiaEmployeeResourceGroupandmanyothersexploredvariousopportunitiestosourceanddonatemasksandotheritems.Thoseeffortsaloneresultedin10,000maskssuccessfullysenttoCumminsemployeesandlocalcommunitiesinWuhanandXiangyang.

Thecampaigntoprocuremasksdemonstratedonceagainthatteamworkisn’tjusttalkedaboutatCummins.It’sputintoactioneverydaytobuildastrongercompanyandstrongercommunitiesaround-the-world.

Cumminsisaglobalpowerleaderthatdesigns,manufactures,sellsandservicesdieselandalternativefuelenginesfrom2.8to95liters,dieselandalternative-fueledelectricalgeneratorsetsfrom2.5to3,500kW,aswellasrelatedcomponentsandtechnology.Cumminsservesitscustomersthroughitsnetworkof600company-ownedandindependentdistributorfacilitiesandmorethan7,200dealerlocationsinover190countriesandterritories.

So,it’sperhapsnosurprisethattheplantwasnamedlastmonthtotheWorldEconomicForum’sGlobalLighthouseNetwork,anelitelistofleadersinapplyingthetechnologiesofwhatsomecallthe4thIndustrialRevolution.

“ThisrecognitiondemonstratestherobustnessofCummins’advancedmanufacturingandmanagementconcept,”saidChenHua,GeneralManagerofFoton-Cummins,whichproducesmorethan250,000enginesayear.“Oureffortsonsupplychaindigitalizationandsmartmanufacturingnotonlyhelpimproveourownbusinessperformance,butalsoensurethatwedeliveroptimalvaluetoourstakeholders.”

BFCECwasoneof18companiesaddedtothelighthousenetworkinJanuary,joining26sitespreviouslynamedtothelist.Morethan1,000companiesfromdifferentsectorsacrosstheglobehavebeenassessedforthelighthousedesignation,whichismanagedfortheforumbyMcKinsey&Company,theglobalmanagementconsultingfirm.

“Manufacturingisoftenthestartingpointforinnovatinganew,company-wideoperatingsystempoweredbythelatesttechnologytoachievenewlevelsofsustainability,agility,speed-to-market,andproductivity,”saidEnnodeBoer,PartnerandtheleaderofMcKinsey’sGlobalManufacturingPractice.“Thevaluedoesn’tstopatthefactorydoor;instead,lighthousesfindimpactacrosstheentireend-to-endvaluechain,fromsuppliersthroughtocustomers.”

TheforumsaystheGlobalLighthouseNetwork,establishedin2018,servesas“aplatformtodevelop,replicateandscaleupinnovations,creatingopportunitiesforcross-companylearningandcollaborationandforsettingnewbenchmarksfortheglobalmanufacturingcommunity.”

Networkmembersreflecttheawesomepotentialofthe4thIndustrialRevolution,alsosometimesreferredtoasIndustry4.0,whichincludeseverythingfromcollaborativerobotstoartificialintelligence,augmentedreality,advancedanalyticsandenhancedintegrationbetweeninformationtechnologiesandmanufacturingoperations.

Overall,monthlyqualityclaimsatBFCECaredown40%comparedto2017andtheidentificationoffalseclaimsisup300%.Theaveragenumberofclaimsperengineisdownalmost70%.Productivityisupmorethan40%.

Outsidetheplant,customersareseeingtheirfuelconsumptionratesimprovedbyabout5%andup-time,theamountoftimeanenginestaysinservice,hasincreasedbyabout10%.

PerhapsthemostexcitingthingaboutthechangesatBFCECisthatthere’sroomforimprovement.Theamountofdatacollectediseverincreasing,whichcanhelpwiththeanalysesnecessarytofindgreaterefficiencies.Plantofficialsalsobelieveanotherthirdoftheplantcouldstillbedigitized.

Aspartofarobuststrategy,Cumminsofficialsareinvestinginsimilartechnologicaladvancesinplantsaroundtheworld,asIndustry4.0takesshapeatthecompany.Cummins,forexample,expectedtoend2019withabout30collaborativerobotssharingspacewithhumanemployeesatmorethanadozenlocations.Theyoftenperformthemostrepetitivetasks,improvingemployeehealthandsafetyinadditiontoefficiency.
