UnveiledinSeptember2019atthe24thSuperchargingConferenceinDresdeninthewhitepaper,"DevelopmentofanImprovedTurbochargerDynamicSeal,"thetechnologywasdevelopedthroughCumminsresearchanddevelopment(R&D)andwaspioneeredbyMatthewPurdey,groupleaderinSubsystemsEngineeringatCTT. 

Theresearchcameinresponsetocustomersdemandingsmallerengineswithgreaterpowerdensity,alongwithloweremissions,andtheturbochargerremainedoneofthemostcriticalcomponentsonavehicledriveline.Duetothis,Cumminshascontinuouslyremaineddedicatedtodeliveringexcellencetocustomersthroughcontinuallyexploringinnovativewaystoimproveturbochargerperformanceandbyconsideringimprovementswhichaffectdurability,aswellasperformanceandemissionbenefits.Thisnewtechnologyfurtherenhancestheoilsealingcapabilitytoofferawiderangeofbenefitstocustomers.

ThenewsealingtechnologyforHolset®turbochargersallowsturbodownspeeding,downsizing,oilleakagepreventionontwo-stagesystemsandenablesCO2andNOxreductionsforothertechnologies.Thetechnologyhasalsoimprovedthermalmanagementandreliabilityoftheturbocharger.Inaddition,duetoitsrobustness,ithaspositivelyaffectedthefrequencyofmaintenanceofadieselengine.

FollowingtheN95announcement,onApril14,Cumminsannouncedanadditionalpartnershipwith3M,whichwouldincludetheutilizationofequipmenttypicallyusedforproducingdieselenginefilterstomanufacturehigh-efficiencyparticulatefiltersforusein3M’spoweredairpurifyingrespirators(PAPRs).

DAVIS:WeneededtomovefastandsawanopportunitytouseourexistingworkforceatourNeillsville,Wisconsinfacilitytomeetthisdemand.Weacquired,commissionedandtestedanewpleaterinamatterofweeksandhavealreadyproducedmorethan41,000filtersfor3M’sPAPRssincemid-April.Internally,wetalkalotaboutemployeeempowermentanddecisionmakingandthisprojectisatestamenttoouremployees’abilitytoadaptquicklytofillanimportantsupplyvoidinatotallydifferentmarket. 

DAVIS:Demandhasbeenstrong–infact,it’sgettingtothepointwheredemandwillexceedourcapacity.Seeingsomanyorganizationsinquireaboutthemediareinforcedhowcriticaltheneedformaskswasglobally.We’vetalkedwithUniversities,healthcaresystems,otherautomotivecompaniesandmaskmanufacturerslargeandsmallaboutourmedia.Todate,we’vesupplied6tonsofthecompletecompositemultilayermediathatcanbeusedinN95masks,andwe’veshipped8tonsofasimplerpolypropylenemediathatcanbeusedinsurgicalmasks. 

DAVIS:We’veaddedmanufacturingcapacityandcapabilitytoourplantsandplanoncontinuingtosupplymediaformasksaslongasthereisdemandandaneedtoprotectourcommunitiesfromCOVID-19. 

DAVIS:Ouremployeesalwayswanttohelp,anditwasn’tasurprisewhentheydemonstratedhowquicklywecouldpivotfromsupplyingfiltersfordieselenginestosupplyingthemediathatiscriticaltomanufacturingmedicalPPE.Itonlytookusonemonthtogofromconcepttoproductiononthisproject!CumminsFiltrationemployeesacrosstheglobehavetakenimmenseprideinbeingpartofthesolutiontohelpourcommunities,andtheentireinitiativeisagreatexampleofhowCumminsembodiesourmissionofmakingpeople’slivesbetterbypoweringamoreprosperousworld.

RickRenfroehadbeenplanningacruisetoKeyWestandtheBahamasforwelloveradecade.ThedayhefinallygothiskeystoaSundancer440withtwinCumminsdiesels,thatdreamwasonitswaytobecomingareality.

Nostonewasleftunturnedinhisboatingpreparations.Everymechanicalelementwascheckedandtestedaheadoftime,andiftherewereanydoubtsaboutapart’sreliability,itwasreplaced. 

ThisincludedtheHolset®turbochargersmountedtotheCummins6BTA5.9-M2engines.Rightbeforethebigtrip,Renfroewaswrappingupmonthsoftrouble-freeperformanceseatrialswhensmokestartedtoappearfromtheportengine. 

ThenewHX40Mturboswereadvertisedas“genuineHolset.”Theylookedright.Theyfitright.However,whentheownerfireduptheenginesforashake-downcruiseinnearbywaters,ittooklessthantwominutesfortheturboontheportenginetohaveasignificantfailure. 

Assumingamanufacturingdefectwastheissue,Renfroegotbackinhiscar,drovetoAtlantaandexchangeditforanotherunit.Heshruggeditoffasananomaly.Littledidheknow,thiswasonlythebeginningofhistroubles. 

Withthesecondreplacementturboinstalled,thefamilyembarkedonthefirstlegofthejourney.Allwasgoingaccordingtoplan,andtheyspentadelightfulweekcruisingtheBahamasandbacktoKeyWest.TheystartedupthewesterncoastofFlorida,andjustastheywereleavingafuelstopinVenice,theturboonthestarboardenginedied,forcingthemtoidlefor14miles(about23km)tothenearestmarina. 

Apostmortemontheturborevealedasealfailureandoilleakintheturbo,whichcausedtheshafttosnap.Thefamilyrentedacartogethomeandaslipfortheirboat.Renfroeonceagaindrovebacktothedealerwhosoldhimthefirstthreeunitstogetyetanotherreplacement.Finally,backathishomeport,Renfroenoticedoilseepingoutofthehousing.Fedup,hesenttheturbostoHolset,whereitwasdiscoveredtheentirelotofturboswerecounterfeit.

AnuglysituationtookadisastrousturnwhenHurricaneMichaelsuddenlystartedbearingstraightdownattheport.Withnoturboononeside,therewasnowaytoescapethehurricane’spathintime.Renfroehadnootherchoicebuttoremaindockedandhopeforthebest.Unfortunately,theentirePanamaCityMarinatookadirecthitandwascompletelydestroyed–includingRenfroe’sSundancer440.
