Enemoknowsfirsthandhowdetrimentaldiscriminationcanbe.Shedreamedofgoingtouniversitybutwasdiscouragedbyherfamily’smeagerfinancialbackground.Herfriendtookhertoanightclubandexplainedtheycouldmakemoneybyansweringanymanthatcalledheranddoingwhatevershewasaskedtodo. 

Asasexworker,Enemofacedviolenceanddiscriminationinseveralforms,butshewasdeterminedtomakeenoughmoneytogotoschool.Sheeventuallysavedenoughtoregisterforclasses.Followinggraduation,shereceivedanapplicationfortheRiseUpworkshopwhileshewasworkingforanonprofitthatadvocatedfortherightsofsexworkers. 

Throughtheworkshop,shegainednewskillsinleadershipandnetworking.Thisenabledhertosecuregrantfundingtolaunchanonprofitorganizationfocusedonimprovingrelationsbetweenlawenforcementandthesexworkerpopulation.Hermissionistoendviolenceagainstsexworkersbypoliceinherstate. 

Pitanwasalreadydevelopingnationalprogramsforwomenandgirlsbeforesheparticipatedintheworkshop.Shehadbeeninspiredtodothisworkwhenshesawgirlsinherregionstrugglingtoattendorfinishschoolandgettingmarriedbeforetheywereready. 

Attheworkshop,shelearnedtheimportanceofincludinglaw-andpolicy-makersinstrategicandeffectiveadvocacy.Asaresult,sheisfocusingherworkonthepassageofanationallevelgenderandequalopportunitybill,whichaimstoreducegenderdiscrimination,protectwomen’srightsandincreasewomen’sopportunitiesinbothpublicandprivatespacesacrossNigeria. 

“IwillknowIamsuccessful,”saidPitan,“whengirlsandwomeninvariouscommunitiesactivelyparticipateindemandingfortheirrightsandensuringvariousexistinglawsandpoliciestobettertheirlotareadequatelyimplemented.”

Cumminsisaglobalpowerleaderthatdesigns,manufactures,sellsandservicesdieselandalternativefuelenginesfrom2.8to95liters,dieselandalternative-fueledelectricalgeneratorsetsfrom2.5to3,500kW,aswellasrelatedcomponentsandtechnology.Cumminsservesitscustomersthroughitsnetworkof600company-ownedandindependentdistributorfacilitiesandmorethan7,200dealerlocationsinover190countriesandterritories.

Takea100-year-oldcompanywithacommitmenttoimprovingthecommunitiesinwhichitoperatesandaglobalworkforcefocusedonfulfillingthatcommitment,andyouhaveseveralyearsinarowofsurpassingCummins’participationrategoalinitsEveryEmployeeEveryCommunity(EEEC)program.

Theprogram,whichisthecornerstoneofCummins’communityengagementworkandenableseachemployeetouseatleastfourworkhourstovolunteerintheircommunities,hadatargetcompany-wideparticipationof70%forthelastseveralyears.Whileambitious,Cumminsemployeesrepeatedlymetandsurpassedthatgoal,reachingorexceeding80%forthepastfouryears.In2018alone,thecompanysetanewrecordof80%,whichtranslatesto372,525hourscontributed,ortheequivalentof194full-timeemployeesdedicatedsolelytothiswork. 

Inpractice,theengagementwilllooklikeemployeesmentoringgirlsandwomen,cleaningupandclearingparksandpathways,helpingtodesignassistivetechnologiesusedtoincrease,maintainorimprovethefunctionalcapabilitiesofchildrenandadultswithdisabilities–leveragingtheuniqueskillsandtalentsofthecompany’sworkforcetohelpbuildmoreprosperouscommunitiesbyempoweringpeopletothriveintheirdaytodaylives.

In2019,thecompanyestablishedtheCumminsPowersWomenambassadorprogramtosupplementthesuccessfulleadershipengagementalreadyunderway.Interestedemployeeswereinvitedtobeambassadorstolearnaboutthecomplexarrayofchallengesfacingwomenandgirlsgloballyandhowtheycouldpromotegenderequalitybyvolunteeringintheircommunities.

AspartofitsInternationalDayoftheGirlactivities,thecompanyinvitedthechildrenofCummins’morethan60,000employeestodrawpicturesofthewomenwhoinspirethemasawayforfamiliestotalkaboutgenderequality.Childrenasyoungasfouryearsoldfromaroundtheworldsubmitteddrawingsliketheoneaboveandtheonebelow.

Duetothissuccess,theprojectteamisworkingthisyeartoscaletheprojectto19newvillages.Theyarecreatingwaterbudgetsandconductinggeologicalmappingstudiestohelpmakecommunities’watersecure.Aconcertedeffortisalsounderwaytoeducateresidentsontheapproachandprovidetrainingtoensurewateraccessforyearstocome.Alreadythisyear,theyhavereachedalmost40,000people.
