That’snosmallthing.PaducahisthelargestmarineoperationscenterandrepairhubnorthofNewOrleans,Louisiana.NearbyCairo,Illinois,wheretheOhioRivermeetstheMississippi,isamajortransportationhub.Cumminsenginesareusedinthetrucksandtrainsthatbringmaterialtoandfromthehub,thecranesthatliftmaterialinandoutofthosemodesoftransportation,thegeneratorsthatprovidebackuppowertothehuband,ofcourse,thetowboatsthatmovebargesupanddowninlandwaterways.

Thereis morethanenoughtokeepHadlerandthreetechnicianswhoalsoworkinthearea verybusy.Timeismoneyfortowboatoperators,whowanthelpinminutesorperhapshours,butcertainlynotdays.

NavigableinlandwaterwaysplayacriticalroleintheU.S.transportationsystem,extendingsome12,000rivermiles.One15-bargetowcancarrytheequivalentofsixlocomotiveswith216railcarsorastaggering1,050largesemitractor-trailers.Andtheycandoitatalowerlevelofemissionsandagreaterleveloffuelefficiency.

Atowboatcanpushasmanyas40bargesatatimeupanddowntheMississippiRiver,movingnewlyharvestedcropstoprocessingplantsinthefall,andmineralstovariouslocationsyeararound.

Hadlersaidtheindustryisimplementingadditionalproceduresduringthepandemic.HewasaskedifhehadatemperatureandhadbeennearanyonewithanyCOVID-19symptomsbeforehewasallowedonacustomer’stowboatrecently,fieldtestingapairofMarineQSK38Tier4FinalEngines.HesaidCumminspersonnelarealsocloselyfollowingthecompany’sguidelinesforworkingduringthepandemic.

“AsaparentI’mnaturallyworriedaboutmykidsatatimelikethisandwearetakingeveryprecaution,”hesaid.”ButI’malsoworriedaboutourcountryfromaneconomicperspective.Aslongastheboatsarestillmovingontheriver,that’sgoodforourcountry.”

Australia’swildfiresinlateDecemberhadalreadytakenaheavytollonBalmoralVillagewhereMarkslives,about120kilometerssouthwestofSydneyinNewSouthWales,Australia.Now,theflameswerequicklymovinghisway,closeenoughMarkscouldhearthefire’slow,angryroar.

“Lookingback,I’mnotsurewhatIthoughtatthatmoment,”saidMarks,addingthatbythenBalmoralwassomethinglikeawarzone,withfirefightersandresidentsscramblingthroughoutthevillagetoprotectpeopleandpropertyasred-hotembersfellfromabove.“Inasituationlikethatyoudon’thavealotoftimetothink.Youjustact.”

Butbeforethefirefighterscouldfindawaytosafety,thewindschangedyetagain,andthefiretookoffinanewdirection.Boththehouseandthefirefightersweresafe.

Otherswerenotsolucky.Bythetimethefirewasout,around18ofBalmoral’sroughly200houseshadbeenlost.AndtwofirefightersfromavolunteerbrigadeoutsideSydneydiedafewkilometersawayfromBalmoralwhenatreefellintothepathoftheirconvoy,causingtheirvehicletorollofftheroad. 

WhilenotallcameasclosetothefiresasMarks,theyeachplayedanimportantroleintheeffort.VolunteerfirefightersarethebackboneofAustralia’sfireservice,extendingprotectiontosparselypopulatedareaswheretheresimplyaren’ttheresourcestopayfull-timefirefighters.

Australiahasalandmassjustalittlebitsmallerthanthe UnitedStates,withatotalpopulationapproximatelyone-tenthitssize.

Thevolunteershavebeenputtothetestthissummerbythehot,dryconditions,strongwinds,andanunusualnumberoflightningstrikes,creatingtheworstfireseasoneventhemostexperiencedvolunteerscanremember.

CumminsSouthPacific’sKevinAdamsisaProductSupportAdvisorbasedinKarrathaalongthenortherncoastofWesternAustralia.Hebecameavolunteerfirefighterin2016andsincethenhe’smostlyfoughtgrassfiresandperhapstheoccasionalhousefire.

Butlastmonthhefoundhimselffarfromhome,fightingthebiggestwildfireshehadeverseen.Hisbrigadeofabout20firefighterswasaskedtocometoaremoteareainWesternAustraliaabout900kilometerseastofPerthtohelpcontainafire. 

Adamshadthenecessaryskillstooperatetheheavyequipmentcriticaltotheeffort.Thefireswerefarfromanysignificantsuppliesofwater.Crewsinsteadbuiltfirebreaksdesignedtocontaintheblazebyrobbingitofthefuelneededtospread.

Whenhefirstsawtheflamestheywereupagainst,whichclosedthemajoreast-westhighwayAustralia,heknewthestakeswerehigh.

Theflamessometimesextendedastoryormoreintotheair,consuminggrass,bushes,treesandanythingelseinthefire’sway.Thickblacksmokedarkenedtheotherwiseblueskiesabove.

Somepeoplehadbeenstuckinroadhousesalongthehighwayforseveraldaysbecauseofthefireandafewcommunitieswerecutofffromessentialservices.Theclosureofthehighwayimpactedtheeconomy,too.Businesses,includingCummins,couldn’tsendandreceivegoodsfromotherstates.

Perhapshismostmemorablemoment,beyondthesheersizeofthefire,waswhenAdamswaspartofacaravanofabout200vehiclesevacuatingnearly400peoplefromacommunitycutoffbytheblaze.

VolunteershavenotonlybeenonornearthefrontlinesinAustralia,they’vealsobeenmanagingalotofthelogisticsbehindtheeffort.

AshleyWaughisaMineSiteRepresentativeatCumminsbasedinDubbo,acityineast-centralNewSouthWales.He’salsoCaptainofalocalbrigadeof50firefightersandhehelpsmanageeighthelicoptersandninefixed-wingfirebombersforthestatefireagency’saircraftoffice.

Althoughhe’snotapilot,hedevelopedastronginterestintheroleairsupportplaysinfirefightingandeventuallytookamoreformalpositionhelpingtomanagehelicoptersandaircraft.

Watchoneofthefirebombers(above)managedbyAshleyWaughdeliverfireretardanttoprotecttreesfromapproachingwildfiresinAustralia.

Hisjobthisfireseasonhasmeantknowingwheretheremightbesuppliesofwateravailableforthelargebucketsthathelicopterscancarry.Thedryweather significantlyreducedwaterlevelsinmanyreservoirs.

WaughalsohadtoensuretherewasahelicopteravailabletoprotecttheWollemiPines,asmallgatheringoftreesintheBlueMountainsofWollemiNationalPark,about120kilometersnorthwestofSydney.Theso-called“dinosaurtrees”areanationaltreasuredatingbackmorethan200millionyears.

“ThishasbeentheworstseasonIcanremember,”Waughsaid.“Thenumberoflightningstrikeshasbeenverybad,unlikeanythingI’veseenbefore.”

WaughandtheotherCumminsvolunteerfirefightershopethey’veseentheworstofthefireseason.HeavyrainsblanketedmuchofAustraliarecently,significantlyreducingthefirethreat.

Towardtheendoflastyear,Iaddressedalargegroupofbusiness,communityandcivicleaders,andIspokeabouthowbusinessisaforceforgood.Iframedmyremarksaroundourstakeholdermodel,howservingthefullspectrumofstakeholdershassetCumminsupforlong-termsuccessandprofitability,andthatthegoalofbusinessandgovernmentleadersistoprovideopportunitiesforall. 

Asyoumayhaveheardmesaybefore,whatbenefitsoneofusbenefitsallofus.Or,asDr.Kingsoeloquentlysaid,“aninjurytojusticeanywhereisaninjurytojusticeeverywhere.”

Asweenter2020andthisexcitingnewdecade,wehavetorecommitourselvesinfreshwaystoactivelyseekinclusivejusticeforeveryoneinallwalksoflifelocallyandglobally.Itstartswithyou.Itstartswithme.Wecanbeattheforefrontofcreatingacaring,inclusiveenvironmentwhereeveryonecanthrive. 

TomLinebargerbecameChairmanandCEOofCumminsInc.,thelargestindependentmakerofdieselenginesandrelatedproductsintheworld,onJanuary1,2012. PriortobecomingChairmanandCEO,heservedasPresidentandCOOfrom2008to2011,ExecutiveVicePresidentandPresident,PowerGenerationBusinessfrom2003to2008,VicePresidentandChiefFinancialOfficerfrom2000to2003,andVicePresident,SupplyChainManagementfrom1998to2000.

CumminsEngineerShefaliRanaspent theholidaysin Utah,nottoskiorhike,butrathertoworkinthedesert,livinginextremelytightquarters andeatingmostlyfreeze-driedfood.Andshecouldn’tbemoreexcitedaboutit.

That’sbecauseshewenttotheMarsSociety’sMarsDesertResearchStation(MDRS)tostudylifeontheredplanet,oratleastascloseasyoucangettoitonEarth.

“I’mveryinterestedinspaceandthismaybemybestchancetostudyandsimulatethelifeandworkofanastronautforfuturemannedexpeditionsinaMarsanalogandtostudythechallengesassociatedwithit,”saidRana,whowaspartofasix-personteammadeupofPurdueUniversitystudents,alumniandfacultyvisitingtheMDRSforatwo-weekstint. 

TheMarsSocietydescribesitselfas“theworld’slargestandmostinfluentialspaceadvocacyorganization”dedicatedtothe explorationofMars.Itcreatedtheresearchstationsome18yearsagotoenablevisitorstoexperiencewhatlifemightbelikeonMars,andtoconductresearchthatmightbehelpfulshouldmankindtraversethe140millionorsomilestotheplanet.

ThesocietymaintainstheUtahdesertresemblesMars,fromthebarrenlandscapetotheisolationresearchersexperienceatthesix-buildingcompound,whichseeminglyrisesoutofthemiddleofnowhere.

Groupsatthestation,roughlyfourhourssouthofSaltLakeCity,Utah,mustfollowarigorousprotocol,onlyventuringoutsideinspacesuitsmodelingwhatwouldbeneededtoprotectthemfromMars’harshenvironment.Marshasanaveragetemperatureofaboutminus80degreesFahrenheit(minus60degreesCelsius),one-thirdthegravityofearthandtheMarssolarday,referredtoassol,is24hours39minuteslong. 

Mostofthecompound’sbuildings,whichincludeasciencedomeandsolarobservatory,areconnectedbycoveredwalkwayssimulatingtheenclosedtunnelsthatwouldbenecessaryifteamsreallymadethefive-to10-monthtriptoMars.  

Rana,aNewProductReliabilityEngineerinCumminsEmissionSolutions,waspartofateamsponsoredbythePurduechapteroftheMarsSocietyandtheuniversity’sSchoolofAeronauticsandAstronautics.Shesaidshehasalwaysbeeninterestedinspace,whichwasheightenedafterthespaceprograminhernativeIndiabeganpursuingthelandingofanunmannedspacecraftonthemoon.

ThePurdueteamconductedawiderangeofresearch,includingastudyofclaysoilssimilartothosefoundonMars,usingradartoevaluatepropertiesofthebedrocklayers,thedecision-makingprocessesofastronautswhennotincontactwiththeresearchstationandtheimpactofenvironmentalfactorsontheperformanceofastronauts.

Purdue’sMarsprogramstrivestogetamixofstudents,includingmenandwomenaswellasundergradsandpost-grads.Dr.CesareGuariniello,aresearchscientistintheSchoolofMechanicalEngineering,madehisthirdtriptotheMDRSandservedascommanderofthemission. 

Inadditiontokeepingtheteamontaskwhilemaintainingprotocols,hesawhisroleashelpingteammembersadjusttoworkinginasmallspaceandadjustingtotheisolation. 

“Iknowforme,theisolationisthebiggestadjustment,andyoudon’tfullyappreciateituntiltheworkisoverandyoureturnhome,”hesaid.“Justpassingthroughtheclosestsmalltownsfeelsliketherearesomanypeople.”

Aheavysnowkepttheteamclosetotheresearchstationforthefirstfewdaysofthegroup'svisit.SnowhasbeendetectedinMars'upperatmosphere,butitwouldvaporizebeforeeverreachingtheplanet'ssurface.

Thesnowattheresearchstationperhapsdetractedfromanyvisualcomparisonstotheredplanet,butitdidlikelymakeforamoreauthenticexperienceinatleastonerespect.HumanvisitorstoMarswouldlikelystayclosetohomegiventheextremetemperatures,violentduststorms,radiationandotherdeadlyhazards.

BothRanaandDr.Guariniello,anativeofItaly,wouldlovethechancetotravelintospacesomedayandtheyhopethisexperiencemighthelpmaketheircasealittlestrongershouldtheyevergetclose.Buttheyknowopportunitiesareextremelylimitedandtheoddsareagainstthem.

“Iftheopportunitypresenteditself,Iwouldgladlygo,”Ranasaid.“Ihopeourworkaddstothebodyofknowledgeforsustainableexplorationaswecelebrate50yearsofApollo11andpreparefortheArtemisandGaganyaanmissions.”
