Thecanteenisoperatedbyanoutsidesupplier.It’slocalmanager andhisstaffhavebeenworkingattheplantsolongtheyarepartoftheplantfamily.Astheplantimplementedsocialdistancingandwork-from-homewhenpossible,itbecameobviousthecanteenshouldprovidetake-awayserviceonly.

Asaresult,canteenutilizationdecreased,andthecanteenhadexcessfoodavailablethatitdidn’twanttospoil.Thecanteenmanager spokewithDaventryPlantManagerDaveBarkeraboutthechallengesthecanteenwasfacingandtogethertheydevisedaplan.

First,thecanteenbegansellingbasicgroceriestoCumminsemployeesatcost,includingpasta,eggs,breadandmilk.This eased theshoppingburdenontheplant’sessentialworkforceatatimemanygrocerystoresacrossthecountry,andaroundtheworldforthatmatter,werefindingithardtokeepthebasicsontheirshelves. Then,thepartnersthoughtaboutwhatelsetheycoulddo.

Thistime,theyengagedtheplant’sCommunityInvolvementTeam.Theteamreachedouttolocalschoolsandlearnedsomeneededhelpprovidinglunchestovulnerablechildrenwithschoolsclosed.

TheyalsolearnedaDaventrycharityneededakitchentocontinueprovidingmealstounderprivilegedchildren.Thepartnersgavethecharityanewoption:focusondemandanddistributionwhilethecanteenstafftakesonfoodproduction.

Today,theDaventrycanteenstaffisproducing300packedlunchesperday,whichthecharitydeliverstolocalschoolsandsometimesdirectlytothehomesofvulnerablechildrenwhotypicallyreceivefreeluncheswhenschoolsareopen.

Whentheorganizationleavesamealatadoorsteptomaintainsocialdistancing,therecipientsoftenshoutouttheirappreciationfromdoorsorwindowsasthecharityvolunteersdeliveringthemealsdepart.

“Thesecommunityactionsarereallyimpactfulandtheyboostmoraleforouremployeesatatimewhenmanyarefeelingalittlenervous,”Barkersaid.“TheoverwhelmingpositiveresponsefromourcommunityandourDaventryemployeesismotivatingusall.”
